a crazy mixed up world we live in. Even though I went to art school, I didn't get to graphic design from there. Okay, it was the late Seventies and early Eighties. MTV was just starting up. I was playing in a new wave band in Memphis and boy did I want to make videos. I started out shooting a bunch of stuff in mirrors, real pretty, like a something from a Niagra Falls motel room.
I took about 10 more years and got my degree in film in San Francisco. Well there ain't much movie-making in San Francisco proper, so I went to work for a commercial production company. I worked there as an intern for about a hundred years and then was suddenly kicked into being a producer. There's not a whole lot of difference frankly. I made a bunch of television companies and then the magic world of Interactive Multimedia started--CD-ROMs, Texas Tea, you know the deal. I did a few of those, but was having difficulty providing accurate estimates. I decided the best way to do that was to learn the software tools.
The gates opened and it all made sense. I have been doing graphic design ever since.
I have incorporated my graphic design work into my film work and vice versa. Here are some stills from various films, commercials and videos I have produced or otherwise been involved in.

On the Making of Cardinal Point Wines
This is a documentury on how Cardinal Point Winery makes their particular wines. They hired us after seeing the documentary we made about our neighborhood, Still Life with Donuts.
During our preproduction discussions, it became apparent that visitors to the winery would stay for just 15-20 minutes and would have little knowledge of the effort that goes into each bottle of wine. Our clients figured that an educated customer is a happy customer, and that a happily educated customer will have the confidence to buy more wine.
It compresses a whole year into fifteen minutes--we structured it around the four seasons and the activities during each part of the yea: planting, tending, harvesting and vinting. The video runs in their tasting room seven days a week.
As a result of this project, I ended up designing their logo, a number of bottle labels and their business cards.

Who's Looney Now: The Story of John Armstrong Chaloner
We are deep into production of this documentary, Who's Looney Now? We are shooting on a 24P camera--it's a gorgeous beast and makes everything look like film.
The project is a fascinating look into the mind of an eccentric millionaire. Look for this on the box in 2005.

Project Open Hand PSA
A public service announcement to raise money for a meals-on-wheels type service for people with HIV/AIDs. There is a man under the table operating that puppet. He was on his back, staring into a tv monitor of the action above the table. He improvised all the dialogue from under the table and it was a joy to watch.

True Margrit Music Video
A music video (finally!) for the San Francisco band True Margrit. This video used a lot of water and fire effects, long before those were available in a computerized medium. The leader of the band flew over and stomped on a chocolate birthday cake in one scene. I had a back-up cake just in case. Delicious.
I sat on the edge of a cliff overlooking the Pacific ocean while shooting this one. I have a horrible fear of heights ever since.
